As a Iraq Veteran Memorial Day is a very special day to me, I no longer see it simply as a day to take off from work and make a long weekend on the lake like I did when I was younger. Memorial Day is a day to pay respect and give thanks to those who lost their lives defending our great country and to be mindful that there are many disabled veterans that we can help by donating or simply lending a hand when possible.

Memorial Day goes all the way back to 1868 when General John A. Logan issued General Order 11 in which he stated the following:

Let us, then, at the time appointed gather around their sacred remains and garland the passionless mounds above them with the choicest flowers of spring-time; let us raise above them the dear old flag they saved from dishonor; let us in this solemn presence renew our pledges to aid and assist those whom they have left among us a sacred charge upon a nation’s gratitude, the soldier’s and sailor’s widow and orphan.
